Starting A Team

As a club we are constantly looking to expand our range of teams so that we can provide opportunities for all children to pursue their footballing journey. This is only possible through the support of volunteers.  No previous experience is necessary, and the structure and support of the club aims to make the process of setting up and running a team as easy as possible.

Interested? The following information outlines the key requirements to setting up a team, what is involved in running a team and how Wolverhampton Olympic will support you should you wish to take the step into the fantastic world of grass roots football….

Players

First and foremost, you will require players! The following guide outlines squad sizes for each age group-

With the FA Future Fit strategy coming into play from the season 2026/27, squad sizes will vary. As a guide the table below outlines suggested number of players-

To further support his we have our newly formed academy setup for both boys and girls that pools potential players who have shown an interest in football and allows them to follow our club training programme in anticipation of them stepping into a Wolverhampton Olympic team.

Remember, this is not about ability, this is about giving children the opportunity to play, and support them in developing their football skills regardless of background.

Manager

Liaising- Each team will require a manager. They will be the main point of contact for the club, players, parents, game officials and league representatives.

Playing- Also, they are responsible for the fun part, playing football! They will need to organise and deliver training, matches and tournaments (should they wish to enter them). Never delivered football session before? Don’t worry, Wolverhampton Olympic has a supportive network of experienced coaches that you can use for advice, guidance for planning and delivering training and match strategy.

And last but not least, you build your team and work with the fantastic range of players within your squad.

Qualifications- All managers are required to attain and keep up to date the relevant FA accreditation. The club supports this process through funding the compulsory Football Association training courses leading to ‘Introduction to coaching football’ accreditation (formally ‘The FA Level 1 in coaching Football’). For more information regarding what this entails please visit the FA site using the link below-

Coaches

Every team will need a coach or coaches to assist the manager. As with managers, they will need to complete the following FA training courses-

  • Safeguarding Children In football

  • Introduction to First Aid in Football

They will also need to complete the DBS process.

Venues

The club will support you in organising a pitch for home games. The club currently has various venues that we can book and fund on behalf of your team. You can see our current pitch locations by visiting our 'Venues' page.

Leagues

Through the club, you will be able to select which league you wish your team to play in. Currently we have a range of teams playing in various local and district leagues.

The club will complete the registration process with the relevant league on your behalf.

Training

Training times and days are flexible according to what will suit the team setup. Most training with our current teams takes place on weeknights at various venues with a duration of 60 minutes.

You will be able to liaise with club and agree suitable training times and venues and the club will fund and book these for you.  Current training venues use by the club can be seen on our 'Venues' page.

Kit

The Olympic Yellow and Blue kit is well known throughout the West Midlands grass roots football network. Using funding from membership payments, all players are provided with playing kit and training kit. Coaches and managers are also provided with training jackets and tops. Kit is renewed every 2 years, and the team manager will need to liaise with the club regarding sizes and quantities so that it can be order through the club’s kit supplier. Where possible, teams are asked to source sponsorship to help cover part of the cost of the kit.

Referees

We are fortunate that the leagues that we participate within have referee pools that are allocated to matches. These removes the need to find available referees who are in high demand. On occasions that referees are not available, the club has links to a number of referees who may be available.

The club covers the cost of referees for all games.

Welfare

In accordance with FA rules, the club has a welfare officer who will assist with any issues regarding concerns. Also, as part of this, you will undertake the FA training related to safeguarding which you will need to update every 2 years.
